A horizontal machining center (HMC) has a spindle that is oriented horizontally. This machining center design promotes continuous manufacturing activity. One explanation for this is that the horizontal position promotes chips to fall away from the table, reducing the need to clean them. More importantly, the horizontal form enables a two-pallet work changer to be integrated into a space-saving machine. To save time, work may be put into one pallet of a horizontal machining center while machining is performed on the other.
